PBP inspiration

Filed under: PBP, VeloFietsen — quietglow @ 12:34 pm

No comments on my sanity, but this is the kinda stuff that always seems to make ultra-distance magical to me:

At one point, the white line on the right side of the road changed to an actual curb, and I saw a rider a little ways in front of me hit it and go down. A second later, someone else right behind him hit it and went down as well. I met up with a fellow whom I had chatted with the previous night, and we tried gamely to converse. I was getting very sleepy, starting to nod off on my bike, and contemplating a nap. The fellow I was with was in worse shape than I was, and had no clue what we were doing or where he was. He kept asking me when we were going to get into Canada, and what part of Canada we’d be riding through. I explained that we were in France and couldn’t ride to Canada from where we were, and he didn’t seem to understand. . .I explained that we were on Paris Brest Paris, we were trying to ride back to St. Quentin in 90 hours, and that I needed a nap. He said, “Oh. So… we have an objective now. Okay, that’s good. Well, we’re not accomplishing anything by sitting here!” and rode off.

Q is cleared for training rides

Filed under: PBP, VeloFietsen — quietglow @ 8:53 pm

Tried on G’s Pearl’s but they were kinda narrow for me, so I ended up with some of these with shimano cleats:

So I am now cleared for a 50k Saturday cross-city grocery/shopping excursion. Lots of little things to add to the kit, but all the essentials are now covered. Next stop: designing a training program for a mid-august 200k and deciding on when to commence the body shaving. I think I want to get up to 150k a week point as quickly as possible and then see how things are holding up before making solid training plans. Late June bike to Milwaukee?

Possible main bag

I’ve been lookin at these and figured I throw it out on the table. Here is some exposition from Outside that reveals that the Detours CEO is none other than Gary Erickson, the Clif Bar dude. The randon people seem to love these bags, for what that is worth.

Another inspiring (post PBP) bike. I don’t miss the high-rez view of the bottle cage “mounts.” Awesome.

My rando esthetic

Filed under: PBP, VeloFietsen — quietglow @ 1:41 pm

After a whole slew of rando eq reading, I think this bike has become my inspiration:

Starting to make a list of what I’m missing:

  • Brooks b-17
  • cages
  • computer
  • clipless system
  • trunk bag
  • fenders

Totally doable pre-August for sure. Going to make a trip to the shop tomorrow to start the hunting.
