From the new place! We moved a load of stuff down last night and spent the night here. I think that may mark the end of the habitation of the Nip, er Whipple habitation.

Hyde Park

Filed under: abode — quietglow @ 8:49 am

So I am hunting around for some HP bloggers to see what’s shakin in our new hood. I found this interesting list of opinions gleaned from people being interviewed to figure out how one can market to HPers:

“I like Hyde Park because it’s not commercialized. I don’t want a Home Depot on my block. I don’t want a GAP. There are lots of little shoe repair places that have been here forever.”

“I like Hyde Park because other people don’t come here. I don’t want to share my neighborhood with everybody else.”

“I don’t need much night life, because I’d rather stay in, or have dinner with friends.”

“The Point controversy showed how the community is involved and really comes together about what it cares about.”

I sorta knew these kind of opinions represented a typical HP stand, but it’s good to read them. I can certainly stand living around a bunch of people who tend to think like that. Now to sort out this “no Trader Joes” issue…

The K Home Buying Saga Thread

Filed under: abode — quietglow @ 10:14 am

Someday we’ll want to look back on this and laugh. We’re buying a house, below is a brief description of where we are (which I wrote for a realtor), and we appreciate any feedback, guidance etc. I’ll post some examples of places we’re thinking about as I find em.

My wife, daughter and I moved to Chicago about 8 months ago, and have been renting since. We recently discovered the City Mortgage program, and have decided to buy instead of renting for another year. We are under some pressure to get moving rather quickly on this as we are both due for raises in June, and we are just under the max income allowed for the city mortgage program now. I am planning on meeting with a lender in the next week to start getting financing in order.A quick thumbnail of what we’re looking for:-a loft, almost certainly-about 900sq ft whether one or two brs. We spend VERY little time at home these days and find our current place of 1600 or so sq ft is largely unused.-a property within the boundaries of the city mortgage program. We really like Logan Square (where we live now), Wicker Park, Bucktown and West Town. We have also been looking into West Loop. We have let both downtown and South Loop go since they are not covered by the mortgage program.-we are attracted to the lofts because of the standard hard loft aesthetics (open brick, exposed ducts, concrete or wood floors) so we’re not so interested in the finished soft loft style-balcony a major plus-close proximity to the el is a major plus-parking included is a major plus-from some basic calculations, I think we’ll be looking in the 250k range.
