Any marathon or greater distance in which I went into the pain cave (because of pace, temp/conditions, quantity of beer I drank the night before etc) would cause bizarre fatigue issues for 3-4 weeks for me. Especially troubling was this effect I used to think of as “mile-doubling.” I’d go for a mid-range run (say 12 miles or so) a couple weeks later, and suddenly around 6 or so the boom would lower — I’d suddenly feel like I’d run 12 and at a sprint. There’s a physiological explanation from what I hear that has to do with the endocrine system. Your musculature repairs much quicker than your endocrine system recovers, and without those tasty hormones you’re running on fumes.
i really appreciate that explanation – endocrine system, eh? well i have a new-found respect for it because when it’s not running well, then I’m a basket case. cx was HARD.
