PBP inspiration

Filed under: PBP, VeloFietsen — quietglow @ 12:34 pm

No comments on my sanity, but this is the kinda stuff that always seems to make ultra-distance magical to me:

At one point, the white line on the right side of the road changed to an actual curb, and I saw a rider a little ways in front of me hit it and go down. A second later, someone else right behind him hit it and went down as well. I met up with a fellow whom I had chatted with the previous night, and we tried gamely to converse. I was getting very sleepy, starting to nod off on my bike, and contemplating a nap. The fellow I was with was in worse shape than I was, and had no clue what we were doing or where he was. He kept asking me when we were going to get into Canada, and what part of Canada we’d be riding through. I explained that we were in France and couldn’t ride to Canada from where we were, and he didn’t seem to understand. . .I explained that we were on Paris Brest Paris, we were trying to ride back to St. Quentin in 90 hours, and that I needed a nap. He said, “Oh. So… we have an objective now. Okay, that’s good. Well, we’re not accomplishing anything by sitting here!” and rode off.

Bike buying

Filed under: VeloFietsen — quietglow @ 1:00 pm

Thinking really seriously of pulling the trigger on this sucker this evening:

http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/bik/675714607.html

Looks to be one of the Chicago built bikes made with the cool electro-forging process — see Sheldon’s page. I was going to post a brochure pic of it fully loaded with bags but can’t locate it again.

Suggestions welcome, and we’ll post pics if we get it. This would be A’s ride, of course.

August tour?

Filed under: VeloFietsen — quietglow @ 9:10 pm

We both need to put together vacation requests for work and when we starting making plans one idea grabbed us both immediately: Metra up as far north as we can get and then start biking your way for a potential few nights in B&Bs. Nothing is at all definite, but I’m pretty sure there will be no camping. Lots of different scenarios including potentially heading Milwaukee-way for a night before heading back this way. The guiding principle would be easy riding distances for lots of photog/laziness/beer drinking/sightseeing/wineries. We’re looking at sometime in the first half of August. I know that’s pretty soon after Ragbrai, but this would be mighty low impact in comparison. Y’all interested?

Bill O’Reilly has to be one of my least favorite people. I want to see Colbert do a spoof on this one.

So why do people sass the Brooks?

This has to be one of the most comfortable things I’ve ever set upon and it’s already gotten even more comfy. And this is zero “conditioning” etc.

Maybe I’m down with it because I sit on one of these all day:

Speaking of Beer and cars….

“I asked him about the fact the child was unrestrained and the beer was, and he said he didn’t know anything about it.”

yup, a man cares for his 30 pack

“rotten, mushy onions,” “pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock,” and “stale vomit.”
